Research Class Exercise

Questions in relation with my research experience:

  • Name something you have researched in the past for art, design or media

I have done research in the past for our sequential photography project that took place the first academic week during my first lessons for the digital arts module. This research post is uploaded on my blog with the name "Duane Michals photo Analysis"

  • Explain how you researched this
I researched this particular artist using Google's search engine "Chrome" in order to access websites that contained information about the work of this artist on sequential photography. I accessed a website with the name Artnet news that was speaking about Duane's work and what the pictures represent, as long with hidden subtext of the imagery.

  • What facts did you discover ?
By working on this small project and doing my researched I was surprised to see some of the names that Duane Michal worked with, especially from the scientific community (for his "Magic Mirror of Uncertainty" project) and that is a very pleasing thing to see because scientist and artist do not work together a lot of times and  to see two people from this very different areas to collaborate together and have this magnificent result is just great. Also that this artist's work is influenced from the society and the reality that he is living in and how he is portraying his judgement on the world around him into his work.

  • What NEW conclusion did you establish?
I concluded in the end that in order to achieve a good result on a particular project you should first have a well rounded idea on the subject you are working on and to gain as much knowledge as possible to brainstorm ideas and give a variety of content into the final outcome.

Research into my major project:
For my major project I will be creating a three minute long video based on how social media had an impact to the COVID pandemic. Firstly, I will be looking into the history of moving image and the techniques they used to gain some knowledge on filmmaking and script writing techniques. Also because I will be presenting a documentary type video I will be analysing documentaries that discuss social media like "The Great Hack" and "The Social Dilemma". Also I will research into the history of the virus from the very beginning one year ago until this day and how the virus was presented through the whole time. Also I will be looking news broadcasts from all over the world in order to add variety and also a more rounded idea for the matter, because the pandemic was presented differently from country to country.

Research through my major project:
For the software I will be using, I will be experimenting and researching iMovie and Adobe Photoshop as the editing tool of my choice but I will also research other editing engines like PremierePro and also Houdini FX.
For the script of my video I will be using Microsoft's Word because it is a familiar and vey user friendly software to use.
During my experimentation I will be taking screenshots of the whole progression route and upload them to my blog with commentary on each one of them that explains the reason and the way I will be using certain tools.
Also I will be getting ideas of how certain smaller documentary style videos were filmed (mainly on youtube) in order to get a better idea of how my shots are going do have a deeper impact and express my work as professional as possible.
Some of this documentary style videos have nothing to do with the topic of my project but I believe i can benefit from their ideas.
Videos and youtube channels that I will be getting some inspiration:

Research for my major project:
For my major project I searched for Social Media and the pandemic on the internet and stumbled upon some great articles talking about the consequences of information being manipulated from media sources.
This is the link to my initial research post on my blog.

Comments

  1. Please make sure you complete the last part of the exercise. I think it would be beneficial if you identified some shorter documentary-style videos to inform your work.
